Behind the scenes: How the MDP tackle real client projects

One of the most valuable aspects of our course is the opportunity to work on real client projects. These projects not only help us apply what we’ve learned in the classroom but also provide us hands-on experience that we can include on our CV.  Here’s a look at the process we follow from start to finish:

It all begins with a briefing meeting between the project group and the client. In this session, we establish the core goals of the project and outline some initial ideas for deliverables. This helps us get on the same page and understand what the client is looking for. After the meeting, our team develops a project proposal. This document outlines our planned approach, a timeline, the deliverables, and the proposed fee. The proposal is then sent to the client for review. At this stage, the client might suggest a few changes or they might give immediate approval. Once approved, we formalise everything by turning the proposal into a contract. The contract is digitally signed by our team and sent to the client for their signature.

No two projects are the same, and what follows the contract could be desk research, or fieldwork like surveying, 1:1 interviews, or focus groups. Depending on what is found from the research, the project team may create or implement strategies or simply just report their findings to the client. As there is a lot that goes on between research and the final client presentation, it is difficult to detail given the varied requests of clients. At the end of every project, a Final Presentation is given to the client, and two weeks prior to that, an internal ‘Two Weeks Out Presentation’ to our programme manager Harriet, and research advisor Martha. Upon completion of the Final presentation, the team presents the learnings they gained from the project to the class and creates a handover document in case an MDP group works with the same client again in the future. The team’s point of contact (POC) reaches out to the client and asks for a testimonial, which if given, is posted on the MDP website.

This process gives us a real taste of industry expectations, from research to client management. It's a fantastic way to build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and learn how to manage creative projects in a structured, professional environment. By the time we finish the MDP,  we’re no longer just students but experienced market advisors ready for the workplace.
